On planet Earth water is essential to life whether it be the salt water of the oceans inhabited by the many forms of sea life, or the fresh drinking water required by all animal life.

Water pollution can be caused by natural processes, but today the pollution is most commonly caused by human activity, resulting in the loss of many sea creatures and aquatic environments.

The disposal of sewage is a problem in many developing countries and it is often openly dumped in areas where it can affect groundwater supplies. In developed countries pollution is caused directly by agricultural and industrial waste being irresponsibly disposed of, and that does not include the tons of plastic waste, or the result of oil spills, which pollute our oceans, and rivers.

Are there any methods available for preventing water pollution? Is there any way an individual can help prevent further pollution of our waterways? Try a couple of the following suggestions.

  • Get rid of all household waste in the correct way and try to recycle as much as you can. Do not flush any household waste down the toilet, and if you have any toxic materials such as paint or cleansing products, have them collected and not just thrown away. Better still avoid using any toxic materials.

  • Do not throw any type of litter into streams or rivers, they will lead to local pollution and will eventually finish up in our already polluted oceans.

  • In the garden avoid the use of artificial pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer. It is quite easy to make your own from natural products

  • Always buy products which are friendly to the environment. There are many commonly used household products which are biodegradable, and will not cause pollution when they eventually breakdown into their natural components, unlike the millions of plastic bags which currently pollute our waterways!
