Preventing Stretch Marks While Pregnant
Apart from all of the other inconveniences suffered by women during pregnancy, the nausea, backaches etc, no lady wants to have stretch marks as well.
About 80% of ladies develop stretch marks during pregnancy, usually appearing at the 6-7 month stage. Stretch marks are not confined to the enlarged stomach but often appear on the breasts, thighs and buttocks. Stretch marks while pregnant are mainly caused by three factors. –
- The amount of weight which has been gained up to the 7 month stage of the pregnancy.
- Having a genetic predisposition to stretch marks. If your mother had them while pregnant with you, it is extremely likely that you will suffer stretch marks.
- If any concerted effort has been made to prevent stretch marks while pregnant.
There a number of things which can be done to prevent stretch marks, or at least reduce the chance of them appearing, and the routine will also help your overall health.

- Pay attention to your diet. Eat a balanced nutritional diet for both yourself and the baby. Watch that your weight gain is in line with the stage of your pregnancy. This will also keep your skin strong and healthy.
- Massage the areas where early signs of stretch marks are present. Use a body brush to increase the blood circulation to prevent stretch marks from appearing.
- Hydration is vital to both the health of your skin and the baby. Drink plenty of water or other nutritional fluids.
- Take the vitamins recommended by your health counselor. These are important for a healthy skin and the forthcoming baby.
- Keep you skin moisturized. There are many moisturizers available which will keep the skin healthy and supply them with skin ‘food’ and vitamins.
It is important to pay attention to your skin in the early period just following the birth. Continue with the moisturizing treatment. The sudden loss of weight can make the skin vulnerable to stretching. Try some toning up exercises.
If stretch marks do appear, do not worry too much since often they will fade into little silvery lines which in time will become almost unnoticeable. By following the above guidelines the occurrence of suffering stretch marks while pregnant will be considerably reduced.
