Preventing Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is damage to the skin cells caused by exposure to ultra violet radiation from the sun. It is estimated that about 90% of all skin cancer is directly caused by this form of radiation
Typically there are three types of skin cancer –
- Melanoma. Is a malignant skin tumor formed by damage to the melanin producing cells the melanocyte. It is the most dangerous kind of skin cancer.
- Basal cell carcinoma. Forms deep with the skin.
- Squamous cell carcinoma occurs on the surface of the skin.
Both basal and squamous cancers are often referred to as non melanoma type cancers.
The signs of skin cancer often show as crusty sores which are difficult to heal, small red lumps, and skin moles which change color.
There are many things which can be done for preventing skin cancer. Since the cancer is brought on by exposure to the sun in people who are prone to the condition, then it is sensible to take precautions when venturing outside on sunny days.
Some Steps fore Preventing Skin Cancer.
The best protection against the ultra violet radiation is to wear suitable clothing, and sun screening or sun blocking agents.
- Pay attention to the local weather forecast and choose the best time to go out and the strong sunny spells.
- Wear protective clothing which covers as much skin area as possible.
- 30 minutes before you go outside apply a sunblock cream to the skin, and rub in some more cream after exposure to the sun.
- Wear sunglasses and a hat which will provide shade to the face and neck.
- Do not forget that the ultra violet levels are at their strongest between 10 am and 3 pm, so extra care should be taken between these times.
Many people do not use the sunscreen cream correctly and do not get its full benefit of ultraviolet ray protection.
Sun block should be applied liberally. Use at least one teaspoon for each limb and the front and back of the body. Use a good half teaspoon for protecting the ears, neck and face.
The same kind of protection should be given to young children and babies. Use protective clothing for the skin. Apply sunblock cream, and provide a good hat to give plenty of shade to the neck, face and ears.
There is much evidence which indicates that if a child is overly exposed to the sun, the risk of getting skin cancer increases significantly later in life.
