There are some men who seem to be prone to suffering from ingrown facial hairs, also referred to as ‘razor bumps’. They are usually caused by a hair turning inwards and growing back within the facial skin.

Any ingrown hair can cause an unsightly localized red swelling on the face. It has a medical name, Pseudofollicultis Barbae, and if you have suffered from an ingrown hair and successfully treated it, you will be well aware of how to prevent ingrown hairs since the treatment is also a lesson in future prevention.

  1. Salicylic acid is very effective for both the treatment and prevention of ingrown hairs. Buy a dermatological grade after shave which contains this substance to act a moisturizer and clear facial pores. This type of after shave will remain active on the skin for most of the day.

  1. When shaving, make sure you select a cream designed for sensitive skin. Avoid using the foam types which tend to dry out the skin. The habit of shaving too closely can cause the remaining stubble to turn back inside the follicle, and become ingrown. Follow the hair grain with your razor and do not pull or stretch the skin.

  1. If you have an ingrown hair gently tease the hair end to the surface with a pair of fine tweezers. There are over the counter products commonly containing witch hazel or azulene, which can help reduce the ‘razor bump’ and prevent recurrence.

  1. Take good care of your facial skin. Make certain that it is kept free of dead dry skin cells by washing with glycolic and salicylic acid. The use of a soft shaving brush is recommended to rub in a face cleanser which will help remove the tips of any potential ingrown hairs.
