Preventing Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes mellitus is a disorder of the body’s metabolic process which affects the kevels of sugar in the blood. There is no control of the sugar level due to an insufficient production of insulin.
There are two kinds of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes commonly develops during childhood and needs a daily injection of insulin. Type 2 diabetes occurs in middle age and can cause damage to the eyes, kidneys, and nerves. This type of the condition can readily be controlled by dietary methods and medication.
Symptoms of Diabetes
- An abnormal thirst accompanied by a feeling of always being hungry.
- Unusual loss of weight.
- A frequent need to go to the bathroom to pass urine.
- Frequent changes of mood along with feelings of general fatigue and lethargy.
If diabetes is suspected it is important to get diagnosis and treatment and to obtain medicine to control the level of sugar in the blood. The treatment of diabetes has to consider other factors apart from sugar levels. Blood pressure is an important factor along with the levels of both high and low density lipid levels of cholesterol, and the triglycerides.
Preventing DiabetesMellitus.
The prevention of diabetes often includes lowering the triglycerides present which can be done by medicine. But the best way of preventing high levels of triglycerides is by dietary methods. It may often be better to consult a dietician, but a correct diet can easily be formulated simply by eating the correct types of food.
Concentrate on eating foods which are low in saturated fats such as meat and dairy products. Use unsaturated fat such as is found in canola, olive, and peanut oils. Make sure that the diet is high in both vegetable and fruit content, eat fish or poultry rather than fatty pork and beef products. All of these have a beneficial effect in lowering triglycerides, which really amount to being stored body fat resulting from calories which have not been properly metabolized or burnt off.
Regular physical exercise also plays a major role in preventing diabetes, there are links between obesity and diabetes especially in the over forties age group. A good exercise routine makes a positive contribution to the maintenance of any person’s well being anyway.
For any sufferer of diabetes the more information the person has relating to the illness, the more understanding they will have about passing on the techniques for the prevention of the Type 2 condition to others at risk.
Diabetes which occurs in middle age can be brought on by a number of factors which can include being from a family of diabetics, being overweight, and having a complete lack of exercise, although gestational diabetes can occur in pregnant females.
Sufferers from diabetes need to have their blood sugar level monitored regularly. This can now be done at home by the use of a glucose monitoring meter, which can readily be obtained from most pharmacies.
