Anyone who has suffered from dandruff has had the experience of continually combing out the small white flecks which show in the hair, and having to brush the shoulders clean.

Millions of people suffer from the condition along with the persistent annoyance of having an itchy scalp.

There are medicated shampoos and coal tar soaps available for treating dandruff but are not always successful and the dandruff often reappears after a day or two, try a few of the following ideas for preventing dandruff from occurring.

  • Wash and shampoo your hair on a daily basis. Rub the soapy suds well into the scalp to stimulate the hair follicles and prevent the build up of oils which can clog the skin pores. Use a recommended anti-dandruff shampoo to avoid any build up of the scaly, white flecks.

  • Like all body skin the scalp also needs the vital vitamins which are produced by exposure to the sun. Make sure you spend some time each day in the sunshine, but don’t overdo things, excess ultra violet radiation can be harmful.

  • Try to avoid the use of hair gels and styling creams or lotions. They will only cause your scalp to become oily and are all positively related to the cause of dandruff.

  • Apart from the many medicated shampoos and soaps available try a few natural medicines for either preventing or treating dandruff. Shampoos containing tea tree oil are recommended, and check that you are getting enough of the mineral zinc in your diet.

If the white flecks appear scaly, and the itchiness becomes more intense, it is worth visiting a doctor, because what you suspect to be simply dandruff may in fact be scalp psoriasis, which calls for a different type of treatment.
