Constipation causes difficulty with defecation. Irregularity of normal bowel movement is experienced and the stools passed are usually hard and dry. Constipation is not commonly a serious condition but can be a cause of worry to the sufferer.

If you are suffering from constipation or want to know how to go about preventing constipation here are a few recommendations.

  1. Eat a diet which is high in fiber. Wheat bran is an excellent source of fiber and contains other essential minerals and vitamins too. Make sure that your daily diet contains a good mix of fruit and vegetables. Apples, pears, and leafy green vegetables also provide the necessary fiber help keep constipation at bay.

  1. To help in keeping the stools moist and soft, drink plenty of fluids every day. Drink about 8 glasses of water each day or other fluids, but avoid too much caffeine since it can lead to dehydration.

  1. Establish a regular exercise routine which includes the stomach muscles. This will help in moving the waste stools from the intestine to the rectum by muscular contraction.

  1. Go to the toilet when you feel it necessary, do not hold back, let the waste matter pass out of the bowels as you feel the need. Holding back will only cause loss of moisture from the stool which will become dry and hard.

  1. If any of the above suggestions do not help in preventing constipation there are many over the counter laxatives which you can try. If the symptoms continue consult your doctor. It is possible that some kind of internal blockage has occurred which is interfering with your bowel movement.
