Any person who has suffered from a bladder infection will know just how sore and uncomfortable the infection can be. While the infection is easily treated it makes more sense not to suffer from the condition in the first place.

About Bladder Infections

The urinary tract complex consists of the bladder and the kidneys. The kidneys are linked to the bladder and are responsible for producing the waste liquid urine, and its expulsion from the body. Bacteria can enter the urinary tract complex through the urethra which is the tube by which urine is passed, and in the male the point where sperm is ejaculated during intercourse.

If there is any sign of a bladder infection, treatment should be sought immediately since it is possible for the bacteria to travel up the connecting tube and cause infections in the kidneys which can have serious consequences.

Preventing Bladder Infections Here are a few suggestions as to how to prevent a bladder infection.

  • When nature calls and you feel the need to pass urine, do not hold back but go to the nearest bathroom and pass your urine. Remember that it is a waste product of your body and can hold many bacteria which given the chance will rapidly grow and increase the risk of a bladder infection.

  • Be careful of which kind of chemical you use close to your genital areas. Infections have been known to have been the result of indulging in bubble baths. For females it is wise to avoid the use of vaginal sprays or any form perfume in this sensitive area; they can both increase bacterial activity and cause a bladder infection.

  • Pay great attention to personal hygiene especially in the areas around the genitals. Wash and dry regularly the area. If the area is allowed to be wet for prolonged periods of time, maybe after enjoying a swim, change out of your swimming gear. Excess moisture is an ideal environment for bacterial growth to be encouraged. For females always try and pass urine following sexual intercourse, there can be bacteria in the male sperm which you can readily flush out by adopting this practice.

  • Drink plenty of water every day; apart from being an excellent thing to do to maintain good health, drinking about 10 glasses each day will help keep your urinary tract clean and flushed out by ensuring that you pass urine regularly.

A further recommendation for preventing bladder infections is the use of cranberry juice or a cranberry supplement. This substance seemingly inhibits bacteria from becoming attached to the wall lining of the urethra. It is better to use the cranberry supplement since it will be more concentrated and not contain any sugar or other additives which may be present in the juice.
